There were also tests at Dugway with other weapons of mass destruction, including 332 open-air tests of biological weapons, 74 dirty bomb tests, and eight furnace heatings of nuclear material under open air conditions to simulate the dispersal of fallout in the case of meltdown of aeronautic nuclear reactors. In total, almost 500,000 lb (230,000 kg) of nerve agent were dispersed during open-air tests. There were at least 1,100 other chemical tests at Dugway during the time period of the Dugway sheep incident. According to reports from New Scientist, Dugway was still producing small quantities of non-infectious anthrax of a type used in the making of vaccines as late as 1998, 30 years after the United States renounced biological weapons. Activities at Dugway included aerial nerve agent testing. Since its founding in 1941, much of the activity at Dugway Proving Ground has been a closely guarded secret. A report, commissioned by Air Force Press Officer Jesse Stay and first made public in 1998, was called the "first documented admission" from the Army that a nerve agent killed the sheep at Skull Valley. Six thousand sheep were killed on ranches near the base, and the popular explanation blamed Army testing of chemical weapons for the incident, though alternative explanations have been offered. The Dugway sheep incident, also known as the Skull Valley sheep kill, was a March 1968 sheep kill that has been connected to United States Army chemical and biological warfare programs at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. Now you have downloaded the source code of Netatalk to your home folder, installed some required packages for building Netatalk and changed the directory to the downloaded folder. You have to type Y for yes when Terminal asks you if it should continue: sudo apt-get build-dep netatalk sudo apt-get install cracklib2-dev fakeroot libssl-dev sudo apt-get source netatalk cd netatalk-2 * Now fire up your Terminal under Applications > Accessories and execute the following lines (separately). If the install package works for you just skip the following self compiling process and head over to the Configure Netatalk section. Although written in italian you can follow the necessary code snippets for installing this package in his blog post. Check the Source Code Box, click Close and choose Reload in the next dialogue.Īlessandro has built a nice. So we have to build our own netatalk package from the sources with the encryption feature enabled.įirst you have to enable the Source Code repositories via System > Administration > Software Sources under the Ubuntu Software tab. Mac OS X requires encryption to work properly but the standard package of netatalk provided in the Ubuntu repositories doesn’t include this feature. Netatalk icon Netatalk is the Open Source implementation of AFP. Here are the steps involved in setting up your Ubuntu box as a Mac file server: #1. So be sure to check the latest comments on this article when the 10.5.6 update is out to see if this rumor is true and if there are problems caused by that. Rumors are Apple will add some undocumented AFP commands with the Mac OS X 10.5.6 update which therefor won’t be supported by the current Netatalk package (and maybe never will). On my Ubuntu boxes there’s no other file sharing protocol like samba (Windows sharing) or NFS activated. Personally I use a fresh installation of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron Desktop version (32bit on one machine, 64bit on the other) and Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.3 and later) to connect to them. At the end of the article you can download my Server Displays icon pack quickly made by me with custom icons for a Mac, Ubuntu and Windows server. I have tried to explain all steps and Terminal commands so you may learn a bit about the Terminal too. To be perfectly integrated with Mac OS X we’re going to use Apple’s Filing Protocol (AFP) for network and file sharing.Īlthough this Tutorial involves using the Terminal in Ubuntu and looks a bit geeky it’s very easy even for beginners. At the end of this tutorial you will have a server which shows up in the Finder sidebar and behaves just like a Mac server when accessing it from your Macs. So here’s my little Tutorial for connecting Mac OS X Leopard with Ubuntu and using your Ubuntu machine as a backup volume for Time Machine but all steps can be reproduced on every Linux box and they work with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger too. or you are absolutely sure you want to use AFP for file sharing. You should follow the steps in the following article only if you want to setup a Mac with an OS X version below 10.9. On Ubuntu, the Samba package can be easily installed and configured to provide connectivity between Ubuntu und Mac OS X out of the box. Apple uses v2 of the Samba protocol, dubbed SMB2 for file sharing by default now, which includes many technical advantages over AFP. This article is very old and has been rendered obsolete for OS X 10.9 Mavericks and above. It questioned cannabis' legality in Islam, its potential medical use, the feasibility of domestic production and other relevant aspects of its social-religious life. The authors redacted a list of eight questions (estefta'at) about the status of cannabis in Iranian society. The article is the result of a direct engagement with Iran's leading Shi'a authorities, the maraje'-e taqlid, 'source of emulation'. The choice of Iran is justified for several reasons: firstly, Iran has a long history of drug use and cannabis has been part of the country's intoxicant traditions since times immemorial secondly, the Iranian state is unique in that it combines religious exegesis with political machination through official channels finally, among all Middle East and Islamic countries, Iran is at the avant-garde in experimenting in the field of drugs policy which makes an excellent case for the study of cannabis regulation. The article engages with the question of cannabis by looking at the legal interpretation of religious authorities in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iran is currently discussing cannabis and opium regulations, which could bring a legalisation of drug consumption through a state supervised system. For prevention, reduction, and even total control measures on the uses of intoxicants among students, it was recommended that parents, religious leaders, Muslim scholars, government officials, drugs and law enforcement agencies, school management, lecturers, Counsellors, Student Unions, and associations, as well as NGOs, should increase the level of awareness, education and sensitization campaigns on the effects of intoxicants among students in the Nigerian tertiary institutions. Off-campus students are more abusers of intoxicants than on-campus students. Major findings of this paper revealed that the commonness of intoxicants among Muslim students in the federal University of Kashere is increasing, the available intoxicants include Tramadol, Marijuana, and cough syrup. The researchers adopted mixed research methods by reviewing some related literature and interviewing relevant people as the instruments for data collection. Across three variations in the Chime suite, it can do pretty much everything that Amazon Chime does but in a more inclusive and comprehensive manner. For CafeX, Chime isn't just about WebRTC or the cloud. In contrast, CafeX has a strong philosophy of being an innovator, and its Chime suite is all about doing the hard things that address IT's real pain points around collaboration. If that matches up with your enterprise IT objectives, then look no further.ĬafeX Chime - Innovative, And Doing What's Hard If Chime doesn't move the needle, AWS is free to move on and find another patch in the ecosystem to disrupt. It is also being disruptive by partnering with Level 3 and Vonage as channels to market, thus minimizing its own risk. All AWS has to do is just drop Chime into the market and see what happens.Īside from the unspecified cost to acquire Biba, the technology which is said to be the basis for Chime, AWS has nothing to lose and everything to gain as it seeks entry points for selling applications to enterprises. Cloud lowers the barriers to entry, especially when you run a massive public cloud. Rather, what's disruptive is AWS's go-to-market strategy. Amazon Chime is perfectly fine for small-scale, cloud-based meetings, but doesn't have enough differentiation or hooks to seriously challenge the established enterprise players. So, how is AWS being disruptive? It's not the offering - a Brady Bunch-style format for viewing who's on a call is not at all cutting edge. Search is Slack's secret sauce, and is a prime example of how to be an innovator rather than a disruptor in this space. That limitation won't be problematic at first, but over time, it's a collaboration killer - and it's a key reason why Slack has been so popular. Also worth noting is limited support across browsers and interoperability with other video systems, as well as firewall challenges, all of which will be problematic in complex, multivendor enterprise environments.įinally, with persistent chat being central to today's collaboration experience, Chime is able to store your chat history, but cannot provide search. As is the case with Google G Suite, Amazon Chime offers no telephony service, so any audio conferencing needs will tack on costs for PSTN connectivity. Being tied to AWS, Amazon Chime is totally cloud-based while this suits AWS's way of doing things, Chime isn't really viable in environments with lots of legacy, on-premises systems. Once there, however, do not expect a true enterprise-grade experience. To get any real business utility, you'd quickly be up to the Pro Edition, costing $15 monthly per user. For example, the free version gets your attention, but it only supports two people for basic video chat. The appeal is that anyone can use it, and while that's great for getting workers to use collaboration platforms for the first time, it doesn't address the more complex needs that create the real obstacles to deeper forms of team work. So AWS isn't doing anything disruptive here but rather what's easy - lowest common denominator to drive rapid adoption. Everybody is emphasizing ease of use, deployment, and buying, as well mobile-friendliness. Most of AWS's messaging with Amazon Chime has been around taking the "frustration out of meetings," echoing what's been coming out of all the other vendors lately. To illustrate, here are some key points of difference between the two Chimes.Īmazon Chime - Disruptive, But Doing What's Easy There's a strong contrast with one of these being disruptive and the other being innovative, and my view is that IT needs to consider how each aligns with strategic objectives. No Jitter bloggers already have covered the finer points of Amazon Chime, but having seen CafeX's Chime suite up close, some basic comparisons raise questions for me about the path Amazon has taken, along with what enterprises should be thinking about in terms of collaboration's business value. I'll leave the branding and legal issues aside for now - we can take that offline if you'd like - and will instead focus on implications I think will be of more interest to No Jitter readers. Here's another wrinkle that perhaps raises some more interesting questions as we all try to make sense of this shape-shifting space.Ī week after the Amazon Chime announcement, I was part of a small group that attended CafeX Communications' analyst event, where a major focus was on The recent debut of the Amazon Chime team video meeting service has drawn lots of attention and, as you may already have read about here on No Jitter, has led to a host of questions about Amazon Web Services' intentions. |
